Supporting Families of Tabas Mine Tragedy
Background
In late 2024, a devastating accident occurred at a coal mine in the Tabas region of Iran. The incident, caused by a sudden underground gas explosion, led to the tragic loss of many workers' lives and left dozens of families in crisis. This was one of the deadliest mining accidents in recent years and deeply affected not only the local community but also the broader society.
Many of the workers who lost their lives were the sole providers for their households. In the aftermath, their surviving family members—particularly pregnant spouses and young children—have faced immense emotional, financial, and practical hardships. The absence of sustainable income, coupled with ongoing living costs and the psychological toll of sudden grief, has placed these families in an extremely vulnerable position.
This charitable project was developed in direct response to that tragedy. Its aim was to support a number of these affected families through short-term financial relief. The project focuses primarily on housing stability, daily necessities, child welfare, and maternal health—providing a sense of security and dignity as these families navigate an uncertain future.
This initiative represents a small but meaningful act of solidarity with those left behind, and a reminder that in times of profound loss, collective compassion can help rebuild lives.

Highlights
In the wake of one of Iran’s deadliest mining disasters in recent years, the Light After Dark initiative was born out of urgency, empathy, and a commitment to rebuilding shattered lives. Afra Charity Foundation launched this project to respond directly to the needs of the affected families. Among the most vulnerable were two young, pregnant mothers who not only lost their partners but were suddenly faced with the immense responsibility of raising large families alone, in rural areas with minimal support systems. The selection of the two families was based on direct field assessment by our representatives, ensuring that resources were allocated where they would have the most meaningful effect. Both families included multiple children and were expecting new additions soon, which made timely support not only compassionate but critical.
The project provided essential short-term relief with a view toward long-term empowerment. The project prioritized the most immediate and critical needs: housing security, daily household expenses, children’s basic necessities, and medical costs associated with childbirth. The aim of the project was not only to prevent further hardship but to protect the dignity and psychological well-being of mothers and children as they navigate this traumatic chapter of their lives.
With a modest but impactful budget, the support ensures stability in the face of crisis. It addresses more than financial gaps; it affirms that these families are not forgotten and that society has a responsibility to those left behind by tragedy. This initiative, though limited in scope, represents a powerful act of solidarity. It reinforces the belief that targeted, thoughtful action can offer a lifeline (light!) in the darkest of times, and it establishes a replicable model for future interventions in similarly affected communities.

The Light After Dark initiative has brought immediate relief and long-term stability to two families devastated by the Tabas mine tragedy. By covering housing costs, basic living needs, and delivery expenses, the project helped restore a sense of security for two widowed pregnant mothers and their young children. Emotional and financial stress were significantly reduced, allowing the mothers to focus on caregiving and future planning, rather than daily survival. With continued support of our representatives, the children’s health, education, and emotional well-being were closely monitored and nurtured.
