Companion

Background

The Companion Program was established in response to the growing number of children and families in underserved regions who face persistent poverty, limited access to essential services, and serious long‑term health challenges. Many of these households struggle to meet basic daily needs, and their circumstances are often compounded by chronic medical conditions, disability, or the absence of stable income.

Recognizing these complex and interconnected hardships, Afra Charity Foundation developed the Companion Program as a structured, long‑term sponsorship model. The program aims to provide consistent, dignified support that addresses both immediate necessities and ongoing vulnerabilities. Beneficiaries are identified through a careful assessment process conducted by Afra’s trusted agents, who evaluate living conditions, health status, financial strain, and overall risk factors.

Once enrolled, each beneficiary receives monthly assistance tailored to their specific situation. This may include support for essential living expenses, medical treatments and medications, and educational needs for children and youth. Continuous monitoring through their social workers ensures that support remains relevant, transparent, and
responsive to changing circumstances.

Through this sustained and personalized approach, the Companion Program seeks not only to alleviate hardship but also to restore stability, dignity, and hope for those living under the weight of severe socioeconomic and health‑related challenges.

Highlights

The Companion Program provides long‑term, stable support to individuals who cannot rely on short‑term aid or existing charity programs. Many of our beneficiaries are children or students who fall outside eligibility criteria for other services, leaving them without consistent assistance despite facing severe and persistent hardship. By committing to ongoing sponsorship rather than temporary relief, the program ensures continuity, dignity,
and a reliable safety net for those who have nowhere else to turn.

Since its launch, the program has grown from 12 beneficiaries to 17 individuals currently under continuous support. A significant number of those we assist live with serious chronic illnesses that require ongoing care, medication, and financial resources far beyond their means, or they are children whose parents are living with chronic diseases and unable to provide stable support. These families are among the most economically vulnerable, often struggling to meet even basic needs. Through monthly, tailored assistance — coordinated and monitored by Afra’s trusted agents — the program helps cover essential living expenses, medical treatments, and educational needs, reducing the overwhelming burden on beneficiaries and enabling meaningful, measurable improvements in their quality of life.

Accomplishments

Through the Companion Program, Afra Charity Foundation has been able to create meaningful and measurable improvements in the lives of those we support. So far, we have accomplished the following:

  • Ensured educational continuity for all supported students who once faced the risk of leaving school due to financial pressure, allowing them to remain in school without interruption.

  • Improved health outcomes for beneficiaries living with chronic or serious illnesses, with several individuals showing measurable progress in treatment and recovery.

  • Enhanced overall quality of life by providing consistent monthly support that reduced stress, stabilized living conditions, and restored a sense of security.

  • Maintained uninterrupted access to medical care, including medications, and follow‑up treatments that beneficiaries could not otherwise afford.

  • Advanced Afra’s long‑term vision by demonstrating how consistent care, human connection, and community support can create pathways toward dignity, stability, and purpose.

Morteza*- Progress Report (2026)

Morteza is a 22‑year‑old young man living with a rare genetic condition known as ataxia, which began to affect him during his teenage years. As the disease progressed, he developed significant mobility limitations and was eventually unable to continue attending school. His father works as a labourer and his mother as a housekeeper, leaving the family with very limited financial capacity to manage the high cost of his care.

When Morteza was referred to Afra, he was in urgent need of support. Through the Companion Program, he received assistance to obtain the specialized medications required to slow the progression of his illness, as well as a
wheelchair that allowed him to regain mobility outside the home. With this support, he was able to continue his studies and successfully complete his high school diploma.

Morteza carries a gentle spirit and modest wishes, and he consistently expresses deep gratitude for the stability Afra has brought into his life. His doctors had once predicted that he would not live beyond the age of 18. Today,
thanks to continued access to treatment, he has surpassed those expectations. He often shares how grateful he is to have lived longer than anticipated and to be able to enjoy the small, meaningful moments of daily life.
